Before Death vs After Death: Which Spreadsheet Do I Need?

If you’ve found your way here, chances are you’re looking for a simple, practical way to organise things — either because someone has died, or because you’re planning ahead.

I’ve made two spreadsheets to help with exactly that:

  • the Before Death Spreadsheet, and

  • the After Death Spreadsheet.

They’re designed to do different jobs — but they do overlap. So if you’re wondering which one to get (or whether you need both), here’s a quick guide.

The After Death Spreadsheet

Best if someone has already died.

This spreadsheet is designed to support executors and families during probate. It helps you stay organised, track progress, and get a clear picture of the estate.

It includes:

  • A place to list assets, debts, and accounts

  • A task tracker covering things to cancel, people to notify, documents to find

  • A built-in estate accounts summary — estimating the value of the estate, and what can be distributed

It’s structured, easy to use, and designed for people who’ve never done probate before. You can share it with family, use it solo, or pass it on to your solicitor.

The Before Death Spreadsheet

Best for planning ahead while you’re still here.

This one’s about getting your affairs in order — making things easier for the people who’ll be handling things after you’ve gone.

It helps you:

  • Record your key contacts, assets, and documents

  • Make note of your wishes (funeral preferences, guardianship, letters, etc.)

  • Track accounts, passwords, and digital life

  • Provide instructions for executors, so they’re not left guessing

It also includes everything from the After Death Spreadsheet — so if you’re planning ahead and want to cover both sides, you only need this one.

In summary

If someone has already died → After Death Spreadsheet
If you’re planning ahead → Before Death Spreadsheet
If you want to do both → Just get the Before Death one (it includes everything from the other)

Both versions work in Google Sheets or Excel, are easy to update, and can be shared with someone you trust. They're designed to help you feel more in control — and to give your loved ones a bit of clarity when they need it most.

If you have any questions or you’re not sure which one’s right for you, just get in touch. I’m always happy to help.
