Getting started

  • The Google Sheet version requires a Google account (free).

    The Excel version requires Excel. Some features may not work as intended on versions of Excel older than Office 365.

  • If you choose the Google Sheets version, you’ll need a Google account (free). How to sign up.

  • If you’d like to use Excel, please choose the Excel version of the spreadsheet.

    We haven’t tested the spreadsheet on all versions of Excel, and it may not work as intended on older versions, before Office 365.

  • Google Sheets version: on purchase you’ll receive a link by email to a read-only spreadsheet. Go to File > Make a Copy to save an editable version to your Google account. Further instructions are on page 1 of the spreadsheet.

    Excel version: on purchase you’ll receive an editable Excel file by email. Please save to your device or OneDrive.

Using the spreadsheet

  • The spreadsheet will appear differently on different devices and screen sizes.

    You can zoom in or out to make it easier to read or use. Google Sheet version: use your browser’s zoom setting. Excel version: use Excel’s built-in zoom function.

  • At the bottom of the spreadsheet is a row of tabs with links to sheets, including Assets, Debts and Expenses. Enter information like account details and value in the tables to begin filling out the spreadsheet.

  • The financial summary will fill out automatically as you add details to the Assets and Debts sheets.

  • If you run out of space on a row, try increasing the row height to add more space.

  • Please try to avoid deleting sheets and sections (or do so with great care), as it may break the financial summary and other links.

  • The spreadsheets are organisational tools and are not intended to replace professional legal, financial, or tax advice. All totals, summaries, and calculations should be verified independently. You are solely responsible for the accuracy, security, and safeguarding of any data entered into this spreadsheet. The author assumes no liability for any errors, inaccuracies, or issues arising from its use.

  • This spreadsheet is provided for personal use only. You may copy and modify it for your own personal purposes, but you may not sell, distribute, or share it in any form without permission.

  • We offer limited support and cannot help fill out the spreadsheet or provide general advice. If you have questions about probate or any other aspect of dealing with a death, please seek professional advice.
